The Guardian Legend! Some fanart to a NES game that made me have nightmares as a kid. Not because it was that hard (but it is, as a kid I never got past the introduction stage and first boss and for a game with 48 possible bosses that’s rather harsh). But rather for the European box art which had a silvery, winged cyborg woman staring off against a dark planet.
The plot summary: “Long ago, in a distant galaxy, an alien race sent a huge world - called Naju - hurtling toward Earth, loaded with a cargo of mysterious life forms.
During the long journey, these creatures have multiplied and become increasingly evil - and now Naju teems with evil. However, deep within this complex globe are self-destruct mechanisms that can be activated to destroy it before it reaches Earth.
Now, you must battle your way deep within Naju's labyrinths to destroy the alien world. You are the guardian of Earth and your saga will become The Guardian Legend "
Coupled with creepy illustrations of the insides of the planetoid and the grotesque monster sprites.
Ofcourse, the European box art doesn't add up with what's IN the game. Which amusingly enough none of the box arts for the game does. But the saturday morning cartoony game art (which i dig) can still be reconciled with the creepyness in my brain. So here we are.
In the game you play as the titular Guardian that can transform between human cyborg and space fighter. You have space shooter and RPG exploration levels.
Inked with markers, sign pen and ballpoint pen. Finished and colored digitally.
Faved because TGL was like the most original game idea ever at the time (and surprisingly enough it has yet to be remade). Combining Legend of Zelda with a top down space shooter...brilliant.
I actually beat that game as a kid; you face the last boss after actually blowing the space station and escaping, and it's a nightmare of a fight. But the wonderful ending music and in-game art of the Guardian in all her glory is worth it.

Great homage!
