The 90's was a weird time. Lot's of strange costume changes and looks all about. This is a compilation of redesign sketches based on those in an attempt to salvage them or figure out some way to make them work better.

From to left: Invisible Woman, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Wasp (as a wasp true story), Captain America (armored), Lyja (I drew this character based on suggestion, I really have nothing against her original outfit sans the headgear).

All characters belong to Marvel Entertainment.

I loved the 90s. Also, think Scarlet Witch is my favourite out of these, Cap being a close second. Good job!

LOL. My friends and I just did a podcast about this subject. The 90's had some of the most radical changes in super hero costumes. I remember Daredevil having red and black armor as well. And I won't even go into feral Wolverine, who just had a cloth tied around his head.

I confess. I was the anon who requested the first two of those (Sue and Wanda). Turned out a lot cooler than I thought it would, and kudos for following up with a whole series of these. :)

I didn't honestly think the Paul Ryan costumes for Lyja and Sue were bad. Sue's costume came a bit out of left field, and could have been a bit more covering, but it's not unaesthetic. Lyja's is a pretty average superhero suit, albeit with those enormous 90's shoulderpads. I liked Lyja's character back then too, even though the retcon to her and Alicia was really dumb. I'm glad they used Lyja in Secret Invasion and even let her stay "good" during it. Huzzah for kickass skrull chicks!

I was a longtime follow of Cap's title, and Mark Gruenwald did one of my favorite runs of all time. But you could really tell his writing was deteriorating along with his health at the end. Cap-armor came around there, and was never meant to be permanent. As such I don't really mind it. It was there, it had a purpose, it went away.

Thor... hated the Deodato redesign and art. Moving on.

Wasp... this one could have been really good. I loved the idea of her wasp-derived mutant cells spreading and making her more buglike, and it made her a bit tougher as well to fit in on a heavyweight Avengers team. However it happened during the Crossing, the Worst Event of All Time, and she was drawn really weirdly and inconsistently by Deodato, so the whole thing felt wasted. If she'd had a design like yours and a decent writer, I felt it could have made her a really cool character again (she'd been neglected and badly written for a decade at that point).

Wanda... ah Wanda. I liked both this costume and the Deodato-designed one she got right after (and kept for a whole 5 issues or something before the title was rebooted). They were stylish and less cluttered costumes. Also, while I was not a fan of how the latter half of the Force Works title went (the Crossing... again) it did portray Wanda as an assertive, kickass leader who could command respect. Kurt Busiek even referenced that when he made Wanda team leader in Avengers some time later. So I have fond memories of that particular time, it gives me some solace when I look at the treatment Wanda's gotten by people like Byrne and Bendis. She's like one of the poor horses at marvel that constantly gets whipped as soon as she shows a hint of hope.

Anyway, thanks a lot for doing these :)

I know absolutely nothing about the stuff you just wrote. Sweden just got Spider-Man and X-Men around then (and X-Men was absent for most of the late 80's early 90's at that and was only relaunched in 98 with the Madureria arcs leading up to Onslaught.) But it was an interesting read.

Yeah, Sue's isn't horrible aesteticly (there are worse bathing suit costumes out there), it's just that random and and so unexpected it didn't gel.

Lyja I just did because I needed a sixth character to round out the set and I was at a loss which one to do. Her original outfit is alright but I did it anyway. I know nothing about the character besides the time she showed up in the Rick Jones wedding arc.

You're welcome, it was a fun miniature project.

Oh, you're swedish as well? What a small world we live in. I see you're "enjoying" our lovely November weather as well.

I started to read american comics in the early-mid 90's, rather than the Swedish translations. I got a mixture for a long time, then slowly went with only the US ones (and then my comics interest crashed altogether but that's another story). So I was reading comics in english for the first time when all these storylines happened. It was an odd time.

Sue's outfit is explained in the story arc, actually. She was possessed by her own evil side, Malice, who had Sue act out her cruel and slutty impulses. She then switched to a bit more subdued version of the outfit which was an armless bodysuit instead, but kept some of the motifs.

Lyja was at least a bit interesting. She was sent to masquerade as Alicia Masters, ended up falling in love with the Torch instead, married him. Then they found her out, she fought them for a bit but decided that she liked living peacefully on earth better and hung around as an ally for a bit. Then she was off living a civilian life when Onslaught happened, and came back in Secret Invasion where she was pressganged to join the skrull invasion but ended up rebelling again and left in peace. And then she had another apperance teaming up with She-Hulk and some other female heroes against a cosmic meance. She's one of my favorite very obscure characters.

Also, that Rick Jones wedding issue is awesome. I have that issue of "Mega Marvel".

Why does it seem like I meet a Swedish person every time I venture into 4chan for any reason? Seriously.

I lived out in the boonies when I was a kid and was sort of scared of mail order so I didn't. All the titles also confused me. My first visit to Alvglans also gave me a bit of sensory overload.

The Malice thing really explains a lot. I guess the reception is mostly because not enough people read F4 at the time or something.

I know right? Also amusing to find someone I asked to draw stuff from anonymously doesn't live that far away. Now I'm glad I didn't request anything horrible!

Alvglans is kind of a dick place. Terrible staff there. But yeah that's where I got started getting american comics back then.

Well, I wouldn't call any of the storylines that led to the pictures you did very good. They were at best pretty average, and at worst terrible. But people also tend to respond in a very kneejerk fashion towards anyting made in the 90's, so... If people are gonna be critics, they should at least know what they're critiquing. That's my view on it, anyway.
